Herman Melville’s Bartleby the Scrivener has confounded readers since its publication. While there has been extensive analysis of the work in many disciplines, its relation to the ethic of work has not received adequate attention. A Foucaultian genealogical approach is used for this analysis in order to reconsider work and its ethical nature as developed through the characters in the story of Bartleby.
